Retractable 3-point seatbelts imported by Business Ventures Limited (BVL)

Date posted

The Hazard

The seatbelts can fail to protect the user in a car crash. Failure or poor performance of a seatbelt in a car crash can result in serious injury or death.

These BVL seatbelts are non-compliant and can cause your car to fail its next warrant.

What to do

Check your seatbelts - if a seatbelt label displays BVL and either Changzhou BWD or Jiang Su Jiu Jiu on it then the seatbelt needs to be replaced.

Contact Business Ventures Limited (BVL) or your place of purchase for a free replacement seatbelt.

If the affected belts are fitted to passenger seats do not use those seats and if an affected belt is fitted to the driver’s seat; NZTA advise not to drive the vehicle.

Product Identifiers

Aftermarket seatbelts sold by retailers and/or installed in cars from 2009.

If you have purchased a second hand car since 2009, it may have an affected seatbelt installed in it and you should check your seatbelts. If you purchased and installed an aftermarket or second-hand seatbelt since then you should also check your seatbelts.

Retractable 3-point seatbelts with ‘BVL’ marked on any of the labels and one of the following manufacturer names listed on one of the labels:
‘Changzhou BWD’
‘Jian Su Jiu Jiu’

3-Point seatbelts:
A 3-Point Seat Belt is a safety harness with 3 mounting positions. The seat belt is built in a "Y" shaped configuration, and resembles a lap seat belt with the addition of a Shoulder Harness. A 3-Point Safety Belt should help restrain the passenger’s chest & shoulder (upper body) in a collision.
Most seatbelts in New Zealand are 3 point seat belts.
